Who’s New in the AD100 2018: Top Interior Designers & Architects Debut
Every year January Architectural Digest announces their AD100 list revealing a curated selection of 100 of the top interior designers and architects from around the world. Year after year renowned favorites are honored for their talent and contribution to our built environment, and while we love seeing these eminent names called out, we especially love seeing who’s new to the list! Here are the 21 new design talents that made this year’s coveted AD100!
London-based architectural design firm AL_A was founded by RIBA Stirling Prize-winning architect Amanda Levete and is known around the world for their stunning buildings which seamlessly meld into their urban environments.
AMY LAU DESIGN
Former co-founder of Design Miami in 2005, art plays a key role in all of Amy Lau Design’s projects. “I conceive an interior as a total work of art, so that every piece in an environment has a supporting role to play within that space,” says the top interior designer.
Committed “to authenticity, resonance of material, and experimentation rooted in precedent,” The Archers is a multi-disciplinary design collective founded by Richard Petit and Stephen Hunt in 2002 and now taking the LA design scene by storm.
“I want to redefine Los Angeles architecture by rigorously engaging the city through design, art, and urbanism,” says the Barbara Bestor, founder of Bestor Architecture. And with a multitude of innovative residential, commercial, and institutional projects she is doing just that!
“I make furniture and interiors, not art. I leave that to my artist friends and clients. If people like the work I do, that’s enough for me,” says the Brooklyn-based furniture and interior designer Billy Cotton whose down to earth style and persona make his beautiful, tailored designs even more appealing!
CARUNCHO GARDEN & ARCHITECTURE
“My goal is to use the garden to link architecture and landscape, forming between the three an indissoluble unity,” says Fernando Caruncho, founder of Caruncho Garden & Architecture. With offices in Madrid and Paris, Fernando is known for his mesmerizing designs which masterfully blend nature and man-made structures.
Known for her earthy style and holistic approach to design, London-based Faye Toogood’s creations are truly distinct.
FERNANDO SANTANGELO INC.
Famous for his revitalization of Hollywood’s iconic Chateau Marmont in the early 1990s, New York-based interior designer Fernando Santangelo is an expert at creating richly layered interiors which retain a sense of history.
HOLLANDER DESIGN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS
“The three ecologies essential to a timeless project,” explains Edmond Hollander, “are the architectural ecology of the buildings, the natural ecology of the vernacular landscape, and the human ecology of how the clients will inhabit the landscapes we create.” Hollander Design Landscape Architects has offices in New York, Sag Harbor and Chicago and has taken on prominent projects such as the expansion of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in D.C. in addition to their many landscape designs for private residences.
Design duo Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee founded their LA-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee in 1998 and has since become renowned for their innovative and beautiful residential architectural designs!
JOSEPH DIRAND ARCHITECTURE
French architectural and interior designer Joseph Dirand’s interiors are always perfectly posed for a photograph. With clients like Chloé, Balmain, Emilio Pucci, and restaurateur Joël Robuchon, whose upcoming New York space is on his current project list, Joseph Dirand is more than well deserving of his AD100 debut!
MADISON COX ASSOCIATES
“I’m always striving to create harmony and order as well as a sense of retreat, a private world for the person I’m designing for,” says founder Madison Cox. A garden connoisseur, Madison Cox was recently made the director of Marrakech’s Fondation Jardin Majorelle (he was the garden’s longtime vice president).
MONIQUE GIBSON INTERIOR DESIGN
“Allow the architecture to tell you what it requires. Allow the client to imagine their most beautiful life. Then connect the dots,” says New York-based Monique Gibson of her design philosophy which has guided her creations of homes for celebrity clients including John Mellencamp, Meg Ryan, and Jon Stewart.
NATE BERKUS ASSOCIATES
Perhaps first made famous through his designer status with Oprah, Nate Berkus has earned his AD100 distinction through and through! A design storyteller and believer that good design should be for all, not just the elite, Chicago-based Nate Berkus creates quality interiors and products alike.
PERRY GUILLOT INC.
The talented landscape architect Perry Guillot of Southhampton, NY has designed poetic gardens for names such as Tory Burch and style icons Delphine and Reed Krakoff.
“Gardens that look wild but are not wild,” is how Piet Oudolf describes his masterfully appointed gardens, and wildly fabulous they are!
RP MILLER DESIGN
Design Miami’s chief creative officer, talented interior designer, and soon to be product designer of cashmere throws and housewares, Rodman Primack of RP Miller Design is a creative talent to note! Known to date for his beautiful residential designs in locations such as Guatemala, Hawaii and London, Rodman is about to begin his first hotel project which will surely not disappoint.
STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS
Known for fusing “concept and phenomena,” Steven Holl Architects‘ AD100 debut was only a matter of time!
The architectural design duo behind the recently completed Musée Yves Saint Laurent in Marrakesh, Studio KO founders Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty have cemented their design legacy! After making their big break designing villas for the Agnelli and Hermès families, Studio KO has found a niche designing interior for top name fashion designers such as Balmain and André Balazs for whom they are currently designing a Paris hotel.
Commune design founding partners, siblings Pamela and Ramin Shamshiri, stroke out on their own in 2016 with the formation of Studio Shamshiri. Their interior design industry expertise and bohemian aesthetic have attracted celebrity clients such as Anne Hathaway and Seth Rogen among others.
VINCENT VAN DUYSEN ARCHITECTS
Architect and designers Vincent Van Duyen is known for his functional, comfortable and minimalist aesthetic. Currently, the Belgian-based designer is working on an outdoor furniture line for Sutherland.
