While Beyoncé’s baby announcement today left little to the imagination—the pop singer revealed the impending birth of twins by posting a selfie dressed in nothing more than a sierra frilled bra top, tie dye hipster shorts, and a teal veil (the religious iconography is all there!)—there are still some things that remain to be seen. In addition to the sex of her new little ones, there’s the question of how Blue Ivy will adapt to big sisterhood, and certainly what this pregnancy means in the context of a growing Knowles musical dynasty. We’re also beyond curious about what the superstar will be donning in the way of maternitywear of course.
After all, when she was pregnant with her now 5-year-old daughter Blue, Beyoncé still seemed committed to super glamorous looks of her girl-group heyday. Big hair, sequined blazers, and a penchant for bump-enhancing mini dresses were her answer to oversized tunics or yoga pants. But in the years to follow, the singer has wandered down a designer-focused and deeply referential terrain with her clothing, emerging as last year’s CFDA Style Icon. From the Givenchy Met Gala dresses, the custom Gucci DIY designs she has made her calling card since last year’s “Formation” video, to the fashion show that was her visual album Lemonade (A lemonade yellow Roberto Cavalli frilled gown! Givenchy antebellum couture! Gucci suiting! Custom sombreros!), her style seemed to be telling a vibrant new story.
The baby announcement itself certainly spoke to this sentiment—there she was, kneeling before a floral archway, festooned in a riot of pastels. Campy but demure, and always headline-making, the look perhaps gives us an idea of what to expect in the months to come. Only time will tell, but we’re assuming twice the fashion and twice the style.
In the meantime, a look back Beyoncé’s best maternity moments.
