This $30 Highlighter Is The Key To Jodie Comer’s Glowing Skin

Every now and again, Hollywood gifts us a breakout actress who understands what really makes a red carpet beauty star. Most often, she is a risk-taker, wearing eyeliner in ways we haven’t seen before, and trying hairstyles that make us reconsider our lazy messy buns. She’s also usually got impossibly glowing skin that leads to an obsession with finding out what skin-care routine — and aesthetician — is responsible.

Recently, we’ve had our eye on Jodie Comer, who stars in the TV series Killing Eve alongside Sandra Oh. Though she’s been acting for a while now, Comer is experiencing a new level of fame as she frequents late night TV shows and Killing Eve season 2 parties and premieres. At nearly every one of these events, she’s experimented with new, modern makeup — from blue shadow to orange liner — with the help of her makeup artist, Kelsey Deenihan.

“We met first on a photoshoot for Entertainment Weekly earlier this year,” Deenihan tells Refinery29. “Ever since then, it’s been a love affair. She’s so pretty and down to try color and mix different shades and make things exciting.” Basically, as Deenihan said herself: “She’s the fucking best.”

We don’t disagree. Ahead, check out the secrets behind Comer’s glowing skin and bold makeup choices.

Prepping Her Skin

“She doesn’t have a pore on her face, honestly,” Deenihan says. “She really takes care of it.” To prep Comer’s skin, Deenihan starts with an exfoliating treatment like Biologique Recherche P50 1970, followed by a hydrating serum like Serum Colostrum Pur. After that, she pats on Creme VG Derm moisturizer. “If she gets shiny, I’ll put on some Givenchy primer. It doesn’t ball up or anything,” Deenihan says.

Getting That Glow

Deenihan always starts with Suqqu Extra Rich Glow Cream Foundation — “it’s my absolute holy grail,” she says — followed by Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer. For an “almost wet, but not too shimmery glow,” Deenihan uses the clear Chanel Baume Essentiel layered with Becca Moonstone highlighter and Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow.

The Eyes Have It

“We always look at what she’s wearing,” Deenihan says. “Like if it’s a fun day, why not experiment with a bold eyeliner?” For those bolder moments, Deenihan gravitates toward both Chanel liner and Suva pigments, with this orange look involving a neon shade called Acid Trip.

When Comer isn’t wearing statement eyeliner, Deenihan typically sticks to brown and black shades of Urban Decay 24/7 Eye Pencils. “My favorite is Perversion for a black, and Whiskey and Bourbon, which are warm browns,” she says. “They just add a little drama.” She finishes with Pat McGrath mascara or L’Oréal Voluminous.

Read Her Lips

Depending on the look, Deenihan will use various shades of YSL Beauty Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain. “I can never say enough good things about them,” Deenihan says. “They are super creamy when they go on, but they never get too dry. For a recent event where I wanted a really red lip on her, I used Red Tribe.”

All That Glitters

“My favorite look on her thus far was probably with the blue glitter,” Deenihan says. “I brought a bunch of different glitters that day and we decided on the holographic, shimmery glitter over the blue. It was a very ’70s moment with the crimped hair.” Deenihan traced Comer’s upper lid with a Chanel liner in Fervent Blue, and then layered on Lemonhead Spacepaste in Houdini.

“It really is a conversation every time we work together,” she says. “I want her to be involved. It’s fun when you have an idea and she adds onto it. It’s just been a blast.”
