Shay Mitchell Always Wears These 5 Beauty Trends — & No One Has Noticed

When it comes to finding beauty inspiration, red carpet events are some of the first places we look. Celebs have the beauty world’s best and brightest pros at their fingertips, so it tends to be a parade of the latest trends. Despite the slew of killer beauty looks that grace the carpet on the regular, there are a few stars that always push the envelope. One of our go-to’s? Shay Mitchell.

The Pretty Little Liars star has tried it all — from sleek, straight strands, to blond wigs — and that’s just hair. “I have always been into experimenting with lipstick,” the actress told Refinery29. “Give me the weirdest color and I will figure out a way to make it work.”

With the help of her glam squad (makeup artist Patrick Ta and hairstylist Chris Appleton are regulars) she’s managed to hit the top of countless best beauty hit lists. Despite the star’s experimental nature, though, she does fall back on a few tried-and-true staples. Think: bronze underliner, voluminous hairstyles, and shadow applied with the help of a guide to ensure a crisp line — to name just three.

But don’t take our word for it — you can analyze her go-to beauty tricks in the slides ahead.

1. Brassy Undereye

Dusting shadow onto the small sliver of skin under your lashline might not seem like a necessary step in your makeup routine, but Mitchell makes a winning case for it. “The [taupe-y smudge under my eye] is something I love doing,” Mitchell told us. “I think that it opens up the eye, so I like having a little smoke under the eye; it makes ’em look bigger.”

The best part? The “brassy undereye,” as we call it, couldn’t be easier to mimic. Simply dip a dense eyeshadow brush into your go-to bronze shadow and sweep the color onto your lower lashline. Voilà, instant definition that’s subtle enough to be worn every day.

2. Elongated Shadow

Take a good long look at Mitchell’s past eyeshadow looks and you’ll start to notice a pattern: a slightly winged-out shape with a super crisp line. This effect is something her makeup artist Patrick Ta does on the regular to subtly open up and lift the eye. We’ve seen him use white, fabric shields to do her shadow on Shay’s social media, which make the sharp line a breeze — just make sure you apply your face makeup after you remove them.

We can’t confirm which brand Ta uses, but we like Shadow Shields for a similar effect — you can even use tape. Simply lay of piece of tape (we like this one) along your cheekbone where you’d draw winged liner. Then, do your eyeshadow like you normally do, but extend the color a bit so that it reaches the tape. Once you’re done, remove the tape to reveal a soft, clean wing.

3. The Goth Lip

“I love a vampy look,” Mitchell told us. And boy, do we love it on her. Sure, the star’s been known to whip out bold reds and pinks, but her self-proclaimed “goth rocker” look might be our favorite.

Thankfully this look is easy to imitate — especially if you already have a go-to oxblood hue. Looking to invest in one? Try Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Damned: It’s universally flattering and makes the look very foolproof, since it won’t budge after you (painstakingly) apply it.

4. Voluminous, High Ponytails

If you’re a regular viewer of Mitchell’s Instagram you probably already know that she’s got tousled, textured waves on lock. But when she’s not wearing her hair down she’s almost always got it in a sporty, high ponytail.

A big, voluminous pony works on any texture, as long as you have some length to work with. After curling your hair (or defining your natural curls or waves, if needed), mist mid-lengths and ends with a little texture spray (for straight to wavy hair) or scrunch in some styling cream (for textured, curly, and dry hair). Rake hair into a high pony and secure. For more volume, try teasing your hair at the root before pulling it back.

5. Blue Underliner

When Mitchell isn’t rocking her go-to brassy undereye, chances are she’s swapped it out for something colorful. — especially blue. Over the past few months we’ve seen the star reach for different shades of the hue to define her eyes.

This is perhaps the brightest iteration of blue underliner we’ve seen from the actress. Fun fact: We love it so much that we decided to recreate it. The trick is nabbing a liner that’s the perfect hit of bold, turquoise color (we love MAC’s option in Cyan.
